It looks like, by default, Flask no longer makes full URLs, for example
`https://example.com/path`. Instead it does `/path`. This will still
work fine, and if anything is better because it reduces the number of
bytes of HTML we are sending.
It won’t mean that requests go over `http` instead of `https` without
the protocol because we set the appropriate HSTS header here:
0c57da7781/ansible/roles/paas-proxy/templates/admin.conf.j2 (L11)
This commit changes all our tests to reflect that URLs no longer have
the protocol and domain in them. `_external=True` is Flask’s way of
saying whether a URL should be generated with the domain and protocol
(`True`) or without it (`False`).
Again, I can’t find the changelog or diff where this was introuduced,
but if you’d like to go spelunking then here’s a starting point:
50374e3cfe/src/flask/helpers.py (L192)
The feedback endpoints use `ticket_type` to decide what to display and
whether or not a ticket should be escalated. We were using the
ticket_type as the value for the Zendesk ticket_type. However, the Zendesk
API accepts 4 values for its ticket_type and these are different from
the ticket_type values we use in our code.
This change converts the Notify ticket_type value to a valid Zendesk
ticket_type value when creating a Notify feedback ticket.
When we get a support ticket we need to check whether a user has any
live services.
We have a method for this on the user model now, so we don’t need a
separate function in the feedback code.
It wasn’t very well tested so I’ve adapted the old tests from the
feedback view to work against the method on the user model too.
Google’s documentation says:
> robots.txt is not a mechanism for keeping a web page out of Google. To
> keep a web page out of Google, you should use noindex directives
A noindex directive means adding the following meta tag to pages that
shouldn’t be indexed:
```html
<meta name="robots" content="noindex" />
```
It’s also possible to set the directive as a HTTP header, but this seems
trickier to achieve on a per-view basis in Flask.
I’ve implemented this as a decorator so it can quickly be added to any
other pages that we decide shouldn’t appear in search results.
Looks like someone in the Ministry of Justice has made a nice little
Python package of them.
I’ve configured it to use the cached holidays that come with the
package, rather than going to the GOV.UK website every time we start the
app. This should be more reliable, and means we’ll only get updates when
we do a version bump (PyUp should keep an eye on this for us).
This is for tickets coming from non-logged-in users. It’s effectively
the same as reporting a problem, but doesn’t have the banner about
the status page (because we can’t tell if they’re actually reporting a
problem now we’re not asking).
It also gives a more generic page title.
We can’t give advice to members of the public, but increasingly we’re
seeing them try to use our support form to ask.
It would be better for them if we can direct them straight to somewhere
more useful, before they have the chance to raise a support ticket.
This commit replaces the report a problem/ask a question triaging for
users who aren’t signed in. It’s not possible for non-signed-in users to
raise an priority 1 ticket, so we never need to triage the tickets in
this way.
Instead we can triage people based on whether they work in the public
sector or not. If they do then we send them on to the feedback form. If
not then they go to a new page which contains some useful links. We’ve
chosen these links based on some analysis of the support tickets we’ve
received recently[1]

On the support page we now promise that we’ll:
- look at tickets within half an hour
- reply within one working day
The thanks page was always promising a reply within half an hour, during
business hours or an emergency. This commit changes the ‘thanks’ page to
be consistent with the support page.
when clients are defined in app/__init__.py, it increases the chance of
cyclical imports. By moving module level client singletons out to a
separate extensions file, we stop cyclical imports, but keep the same
code flow - the clients are still initialised in `create_app` in
`__init__.py`.
The redis client in particular is no longer separate - previously redis
was set up on the `NotifyAdminAPIClient` base class, but now there's one
singleton in `app.extensions`. This was done so that we can access redis
from outside of the existing clients.
At the moment there’s nothing in Notify that says the logo on letter
templates can be changed from ‘HM Government’. While some people guess
that it’s possible, or are motivated enough to enquire, others might be
assuming that the branding can’t be changed (and thus deciding Notify
letters aren’t for them).
In the future we should make this process slicker (eg with a file
upload) but the easiest, quickest improvement to make for now is:
- let people know that the branding can be changed
- direct them to support if they do want to change it
This is better than just keying into the JSON because it means you get
an exception straight away when looking up a key that doesn’t exist
(which via mocking you could ordinarily miss).
Currently we have a bunch of users who aren’t signed in asking us for
the agreement.
This is bad because:
- it’s slower (for them) than just being able to download it
- it creates work for us
We can’t just offer the agreement to anyone, but we can offer to it to
anyone who’s signed in because we now let people self-select which
version to download when we can’t tell which one to give them.
p1 == "should notify team be alerted of this (via pagerduty)"
urgent == "should the user be told we'll look at it"
* If it's in office hours, it's always urgent. It's never a P1 because
we'll notice it anyway
* If it's outside of office hours, it's urgent and P1 if it's severe,
otherwise it's neither
I don’t think it’s a massive risk (we’re certainly mitigating against
any XSS), but having a page on a GOV.UK domain where you can prefill
text on the page from a query string probably isn’t great.
So this commit restricts prefilling the support form to a set of
named questions.
Done using isort[1], with the following command:
```
isort -rc ./app ./tests
```
Adds linting to the `run_tests.sh` script to stop badly-sorted imports
getting re-introduced.
Chosen style is ‘Vertical Hanging Indent’ with trailing commas, because
I think it gives the cleanest diffs, eg:
```
from third_party import (
lib1,
lib2,
lib3,
lib4,
)
```

The GDS Way™[1] recommends using Flake8 to lint Python projects.
This commit takes the Flake8 config from Digital Marketplace API[2] and
removes the bits we don’t need.
It changes the `max_complexity` setting to 14, which is the most complex
code we have in this repo currently (we shouldn’t be writing code _more_
complex than what we already have).
This commit also fixes the errors found by Flake8, which includes 6(!)
tests which were never getting run because they had the same names as
existing tests.
Here is a full list of the errors that were found and fixed:

The support flow was using `yes` and `no` to mean emergency/not
emergency. But not in all places – in one place it was using
`True`/`False` instead.
We were treating anything other than `yes`/`no` as a non-answer, which
means ask the question again. Because of the `True`/`False` thing, there
was no way of the user providing a valid `yes`/`no` answer. Which means
that we just kept asking them the question again and again and they got
stuck in a loop.
`severe` can mean one of three things:
- `yes` – user has told us this is an emergency
- `no` – user has told us this isn’t an emergency
- Anything else – user hasn’t been asked the question or has
hacked/mangled the URL
This commit adds some stricter sanitisation of the `severe` query
parameter and does so up front, rather than spreading it across multiple
functions.
`replace` doesn’t convert a time from one timezone to another. It just
changes the label that says what timezone a time is in 😬
`.localize` is how we handle these kind of issues in the API (see
d0b467b2fb/app/utils.py (L42-L44) )
So this commit changes the calculation to use `.localize`, and makes the
tests timezone aware to check we’re doing this right.
Using and/or over any/all has a couple of advantages:
- it's a bit quicker
- it won't evaluate the second half at all if the first half fails – if
it is in business hours, and convert_to_boolean would raise, with your
use of all we'd throw a 500, whereas if we had or, business_hours
would trip and we'd skip over the second half without worrying about
exceptions
any and all are designed for use with variable length args eg
`any(x for x in thing())`
