Removed as part of refactoring the code to generate the graphs of
template usage on the dashboard:

Didn’t realise that they were used by the functional tests.
This commit puts them back while keeping the code reuse.
- ‘messages sent per month’ is a better description of what will appear
on the page than ‘activity breakdown’
- ‘templates used by month’ instead of ‘this year’ for consistency
I think ‘usage breakdown’ still works for the remaining link – it’s more
than a monthly breakdown, it also breaks down the spend.
Doesn’t need to say ‘by month’ in the `<h1>`s themselves, because you
can see from looking at the page that it’s broken down by month.
Right now we have separate pages for email and text message templates.
In the future we will also have a separate page for letter templates.
This commit changes Notify to only have one page for all templates.
What is the problem?

The left-hand navigation is getting quite crowded, at 8 items for a
service that can send letters. Research suggests that the number of
objects an average human can hold in working memory is 7 ± 2 [1]. So
we’re at the limit of how many items the navigation should have.
In the future we will need to search/sort/filter templates by attributes
other than type, for example:
- show me the ‘confirmation’ templates
- show me the most recently used templates
- show me all templates containing the placeholder `((ref_no))`
These are hypothetical for now, but these needs (or others) may become
real in the future. At this point pre-filtering the list of templates
by type would restrict what searches a user could do. So by making this
change now we’re in a better position to iterate the design in the
future.
What’s the change?

This commit replaces the ‘Email templates’, ‘Text message templates’ and
‘Letter templates’ pages with one page called ‘Templates’.
This new templates page shows all the templates for the service, sorted
by most recently created first (as before).
To add a new template there is a new page with a form asking you what
kind of template you want to create. This is necessary because in the
past we knew what kind of template you wanted to create based on the
kind you were looking at.
What’s the impact of this change on new users?

This change alters the onboarding process slightly. We still want to
take people through the empty templates page from the call-to-action on
the dashboard because it helps them understand that to send a message
using Notify you need a template. But because we don’t have separate
pages for emails/text messages we will have to send users through the
extra step of choosing what kind of template to create. This is a bit
clunkier on first use but:
- it still gets the point across
- it takes them through the actual flow they will be using to create new
templates in the future (ie they’re learning how to use Notify, not
just being taken through a special onboarding route)
I’m not too worried about this change in terms of the experience for new
users. Furthermore, by making it now we get to validate whether it’s
causing any problems in the lab research booked for next week.
What’s the impact of this change on current services?

Looking at the top 15 services by number of templates[2], most are using
either text messages or emails. So this change would not have a
significant impact on these services because the page will not get any
longer. In other words we wouldn’t be making it worse for them.
Those services who do use both are not using as many templates. The
worst-case scenario is SSCS, who have 16 templates, evenly split between
email and text messages. So they would go from having 8 templates per
page to 16, which is still less than half the number that HMPO or
Digital Marketplace are managing.

The bars were sitting in a table cell with some right padding, so they
never extended all the way to the right. Making it right-aligned removes
this padding, then setting the text to left aligned keeps things looking
the same.
Currently it’s not possible for a screen reader user to know which
financial year they’re looking at. From the accessibility report:
> The financial year links are contained in a navigation region -
> tabbing or arrowing through only reads out the links, not the main
> information of "2016 to 2017 financial year" - that information is
> vital for understanding the page content.
This problem also applies to other pages which use the `pill` component,
which is effectively tabbed navigation (that reloads the page rather
than showing or hiding content on the page).
There are specific ARIA attributes that can be used to mark up a
navigation as being tabbed. This commit:
- adds those attributes
- makes the selected ‘tab’ visible to screenreaders and keyboard
focusable
- adds a visual focus indicator to the selected tab
- adds `id`s to the parts of the page that are controlled by the tabs so
that they are labelled as such
This also means changing the pill component from being a `<nav>` to a
`<ul>` because `tablist` is not a valid `role` for a `nav`.

context to screen reader users who could be managing multiple services.

Matches what we do on the usage page. No need to see months in the
future because there’s no way you’ll have sent any messages in those
months, unless you’re Marty McFly.
The previous, weekly activity breakdown was what we reckoned might be
useful. But now that we have people using the platform it feels like
aggregating a service’s usage by month is:
- matches the timeframe users report on within their organisation
- is consistent with the usage page
And like the usage page this commit also limits the page to only show
one financial year’s worth of data at once (rather than data for all
time).
This commit also makes some changes to the jobs view code so that our
aggregation of failure states is consistent between the dashboard pages
and the jobs pages.
The layout of the totals on the dashboard was getting horizontally
squashed on older versions of IE.
This was something to do with the `grid-row` CSS class no longer being
applied when AJAX updated the page. Grid columns don’t work properly
unless they’re contained in a grid row.
This commit wraps the `div` with `grid-row` in another `div`. Not
totally sure why this works, but it’s something to do with how the
DiffDOM algorithm is working. Seems like the simpler the diff it has to
compute, the better chance it has of not messing things up.
Friday at 4pm is easier to understand than 14 October at 4pm, especially
when the UI you’ve used to choose this time has talked about days of the
week.
This is like the ‘pill’ pattern that we use for filtering lists of
notifications. However it is meant for navigating between discrete
things, not a filtered view of the same list.
This is why is has a gutter between each item, and no selected state.
Turns out we already had a pattern about this on the dashboard, so this
commit also changes the dashboard to use the same code.

The diffDOM Javascript sometimes throws an error if it can’t calculate
a diff between the original content of the page and the updated HTML
delivered via AJAX. The problem seems to be when there’s not one,
consistent top-level element for it to base its calculations on.
This commit:
- makes sure that all AJAX-delivered partials have a wrapping `<div>`
- that this `<div>` has a consistent class name to make it clear why
it’s there
On the dashboard:
- adds a new ‘in the next 24 hours’ section to the dashboard which lists
upcoming jobs
- tweaks some spacing on the dashboard so that it doesn’t look like too
much of a mess
- don’t show scheduled jobs in the table of normal jobs
On the jobs page:
- don’t show scheduled jobs
It’s weird when the sending number ramps up to ~200 or so and then
just floats around as new rows are being added and older ones are being
marked as delivered/failed.
It’s also not great that you don’t know how many rows are in a file, if
you haven’t uploaded it yourself. But the only reason you want to know
this is to know how much work Notify has remaining to do.
So ‘sending’ should start from the total number of rows in the file
and count down.
The "you only have permission to view this service" banner sort of
makes sense if you don’t have _any_ permissions, but it doesn’t if you
have permission to create API keys. If you can create API keys you can
do a lot more than just view the service.

This banner was always being shown because the template was never
getting sent the service’s templates from the API.
This commit fixes this to only show the banner when a service has no
templates, and adds some tests to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
Since we’re removing the write email/write text message calls to action
from the tour, we should reintroduce them to the dashboard, for users
who are unsure what they should do next.
This commit extends the `ajax_block` component to take a `dict` of
partials, from which it can select the partial matching its `key`
argument and print its HTML to the page.
This means that the same markup is only rendered in one place, rather
than in two (individually in the JSON endpoint and as `include`s in the
parent template).
This is less repetitive than typing out the HTML with all its attributes
every time.
It also lets us wrap up the idea of ‘finished’ as a parameter, so the
AJAX code will only be initiated when it’s needed, eg if a job is still
processing.
Previously, the AJAX update for the dashboard was returning a big blob
of JSON with one key.
This commit splits it up to return:
- one key for each section of the page
- each containing a smaller chunk of HTML rendered from a partial
The jobs page was already working this way (pretty much) but just needed
a little tweaking to get it the same.
Previously the structure was

It was a `<dl>` before which is kinda weird. Especially when the jobs
table was a real `<table>`.
It also means we can give it column headings so that new and invited
users have a better idea of what it is.

This commit:
- calculates the failure rate for each job
- makes jobs with a failure rate of > 3% go red on the dashboard
These numbers don’t look very clickable white-on-black.
Blue is the colour of links, so lets see if they are more clickable in
blue.
The same clicking-a-big-number thing is also happening on the activity
page, so this commit also changes the activity page to look the same.
The graphs of template usage feel a bit weird to me now.
1. They are counts of messages, but the numbers are very small
not big like we do everywhere else (eg the counts on a job)
2. There’s a lot of blue, especially for something that you can’t
click
This commit makes the numbers bigger and the bar chart grey.
With sending, delivered and failed all on one line there’s not much
space. When these numbers get relatively big (in the 000s) they can
start mushing into each other.
This commit makes them smaller so that they remain separate.
