Re-organised the code to re-use the months array which also was not
displaying a month where there was no stats. This now gets the months,
enumerates that array updating the templates used when there are stats
items so the users sees each month of the financial year (even if there
are no stats) when there are stats they are displayed.
- When a year contains no data ensure a default set of months is
returned so that all months can be seen in the UI
- Add the template id so the user can click through to the template
The link which when clicked allows the user to view different financial
years was pointing to the template_activity page. Updated to the link
to point to the new page.
- Implementation wasn't pythonic so updated it to be more inline with the
rest of the code for maintainability.
- The API is return a float in some cases for the month which is causing
the date to string method to fail.
The current template-activity page is slow as it is using the end point
which uses notification_history and hence is timing out. This adds a
new pages (so that they can be compared side by side) which will be
hidden until is is approved with the larger data set and tested.
Numbers over a billion overflow the two column layout. Numbers over one
hundred thousand overflow the three column layout.
This commit makes the type size smaller in these cases, so that the
numbers still fit in the boxes.
At least one of our providers gives us messages with special characters
escaped, ie a newline comes through as `\n`, not a literal newline. We
shouldn’t be showing these backslashes to any of our users.
Python has built in codecs for dealing with encoding/decoding of
strings – see
https://docs.python.org/3/library/codecs.html#text-encodings
for details. Using these builtins is safer than trying to do anything
regex or parsing-based.
The GDS Way™[1] recommends using Flake8 to lint Python projects.
This commit takes the Flake8 config from Digital Marketplace API[2] and
removes the bits we don’t need.
It changes the `max_complexity` setting to 14, which is the most complex
code we have in this repo currently (we shouldn’t be writing code _more_
complex than what we already have).
This commit also fixes the errors found by Flake8, which includes 6(!)
tests which were never getting run because they had the same names as
existing tests.

In user research, we’ve seen users copy/pasting the contents of the
inbound SMS page into a spreadsheet, in order to keep a record of the
messages they receive. They even went as far as to write a macro which
fixed the errors caused by copying and pasting.
It would be much easier if we just gave them the data already in a
spreadsheet format. Which is what this commit does.
One caveat is that, because spreadsheets can contain executable code (ie
formulas), and because we’re populating the spreadsheet with
user-submitted data (albeit via SMS) we need to be careful about
injection attacks.

The mitigation is to not allow characters which initialise a formula
at the start of the cell.
Only services that have inbound SMS turned on should be able to see the
dashboard and ‘Received messages’ page.
There’s probably a cleaner way (decorator) of doing this permissions
stuff, but I think it can wait until we ship this.
This commit adds two things:
a section on the dashboard to show how many inbound messages the
service has received in the last 7 days, and how recently an inbound
message has been received

This shows the first line of the message. Eventually this will link
through to a ‘conversation’ page, where a service can see all the
messages it’s received from a given phone number.
Tests assumed that the API returns the template `id` as part of the
object. It doesn’t – it returns it as the key used to look up the
object. The `id` was missing from the transformation into the format
used by the front end.
For some reason Flask is fine building the URL with `template_id=None`,
but obviously this doesn’t generate a valid link.
Matches what we do on the usage page. No need to see months in the
future because there’s no way you’ll have sent any messages in those
months, unless you’re Marty McFly.
The previous, weekly activity breakdown was what we reckoned might be
useful. But now that we have people using the platform it feels like
aggregating a service’s usage by month is:
- matches the timeframe users report on within their organisation
- is consistent with the usage page
And like the usage page this commit also limits the page to only show
one financial year’s worth of data at once (rather than data for all
time).
This commit also makes some changes to the jobs view code so that our
aggregation of failure states is consistent between the dashboard pages
and the jobs pages.
Right now we tell people that the usage page is for the current
financial year. This is a lie – it’s for all time.
So this commit calls through to the API to get the stats for (by
default) the current financial year.
We already do this for the monthly breakdown, this just does the same
thing for the yearly totals.
It also adds navigation to show the data for other financial years:
- previous so you can go back and see your usage and verify that the
bill you’re about to pay is correct
- next so that you can check what your SMS allowance is going to be
before you actually get into it
